Angelo Badalamenti - the Straight Story OST
Angelo Badalamenti - the Straight Story OST
Rapidshare ZIP 256kbps
We've come to expect a few things from composer Angelo Badalamenti's numerous collaborations with David Lynch. His scores for Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, and Blue Velvet all took a smoky jazz-noir aesthetic into the orchestra pit. The results were memorable--and sometimes haunting--just like the films. For The Straight Story--the G-rated (yes, that's right) tale of an elderly man's epic journey on a John Deere lawnmower to see his sick brother--we get a different side to both the composer and the director once again. Here the orchestrations are atmospheric, but a subtle strain of folk music is evident throughout. "Rose's Theme" is filled with acoustic guitar finger-picking against a string section, "Alvin's Theme" has a fiddle mimicking a locomotive, and "Country Waltz" is just that. "Farmland Tour" is the Twin Peaks theme gone sentimental. A hint of nostalgia, a certain Midwestern innocence, and plenty of vast-sounding passages make this the perfect sonic backdrop for a film set in America's heartland. Just like that setting, it can seem a little repetitive at times, but--as a whole--it's another memorable effort from Badalamenti. --Jason Verlinde

Pat Metheny - Rejoicing
w/ Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins
Rapidshare 256kbps
"Metheny joins bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins, one of Ornette Coleman's finest rhythm pairings, for this 1983 recording. Rejoicing looks closely at Coleman's group dynamics and three of his tunes (though it's Horace Silver's "Lonely Woman," not Coleman's, that opens the album). The three mesh perfectly on Coleman's "Tears Inside," "Humpty Dumpty," and "Rejoicing," with Metheny generating long lines of melody over sprung rhythms. While the guitarist often shifts musical direction from CD to CD, his compositions on Rejoicing offer remarkable contrasts. He creates a rich overdub of electric and acoustic guitars for the ballad "Story from a Stranger," then generates an almost Albert Ayler-like sound for the intensely electric dirge "The Calling," the mood enhanced by Haden's bowed bass and animated by Higgins's free drumming."

before the flood
I want to post some of these debated Boards of Canada rarities .. compared to their otherwise, shall we say "frugal" output, they have got a whole mess of other music out there. I would hope people would comment and let me know if I'm posting something that is not Boards of Canada, I know we have all been fooled when attempting to acquire REAL Boards of Canada rarities. The original tapes and vinyls these were taken from are rare, limited editions. I don't have hard copies. I don't know anybody who does!
